It is important to understand what causes hangovers before discussing its methods of prevention.

After heavy consumption of alcohol, the liver is forced to use large amounts of water to breakdown the alcohol. Since it is extremely rare for a person to consume just as much water as they do alcohol when drinking, the liver can only get enough water for digestion of the alcohol by diverting water that already exists within other body organs such as the brain.

The subsequent lack of sufficient water in the brain is what causes a headache, while the ingested alcohol irritates the stomach walls resulting in a feeling of nausea. The chemical compounds found within alcohol also drain the body of vital minerals and vitamins, resulting in insomnia. This eventually culminates into a hangover.

The best way to prevent hangovers is to drink in moderation. A hangover is the only way for the body to rid itself of the toxins. Therefore, the less you drink, the less your chances are of ending up with a nasty hangover.

Another way is to eat before taking alcohol. Having food within the stomach will coat the lining of the stomach which will reduce the rate at which alcohol is absorbed by the body, as well as reduce the irritation to the stomach walls.

Hangovers can also be prevented by ensuring that you remain hydrated at all times. This will mean drinking one drink of water for every glass of alcohol. Also avoid drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee that are known to dehydrate the body.
