Diabetes has become one of the major causes of health complications in this country. These medical problems include heart, vessel, kidney, and other types of illnesses. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in adults. In addition, some people have had to have limbs amputated, mostly feet and legs because of bad blood circulation. Not to mention even premature death in many diabetic patients.

So what is this crippling disease, and how can it be prevented? To understand diabetes you must first understand insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed for your body to make sugar and starches into energy. When a person has diabetes they are unable to properly use or produce insulin.

Prevent Diabetes with Diet and Exercise

There are several ways to prevent diabetes. The first step is eating healthy. Be very mindful of your sugar and starch intake. Starchy foods like potatoes, fruits, beans and vegetables should be eaten more then foods such as rice, white bread, and corn. Next, exercise is a great way to prevent diabetes. This is because exercise improves sleep, reduces stress, and helps maintain an ideal weight. If you are a smoker, quitting can significantly lower your chances of getting diabetes.

Finally, do everything you can to have a healthy weight. It is important that you are not overweight for your height and body type, which causes all kinds of stress on your body. Being overweight is highly correlated with contracting diabetes.

By the way, because these steps are part of an overall healthy lifestyle, they will be beneficial in so many other ways. Once you take on these healthy habits, it will be so much easier to stick with them for a lifetime!
